The two brothers is one of the most widespread stories in the oral tradition of Mexico: almost anywhere in the country, there is someone who knows how to tell it. It is a chained tale, to which episodes are added and taken away. In Mexico, many versions begin with the death of the grandmother passing it through water and fire. This story was narrated by Margarita Cruz García in Altamira Tamaulipas, to whom her grandmother told it when she was a child.

Los dos hermanos es uno de los cuentos más difundidos en la tradición oral de México: casi en cualquier lugar del país hay alguien que sabe contarlo. Es un cuento encadenado, al que se le agregan y se le quitan episodios. En México, muchas versiones empiezan con la muerte de la abuelita pasándola por el agua y por el fuego. Este relato fue narrado por Margarita Cruz García en Altamira Tamaulipas, a quien su abuela se lo contó cuando era niña.
